Whether you're after books for four year olds because you have a birthday party coming up, your niece or nephew deserves a cheeky gift, or you want to add to your child's collection at home - you've come to the right place!
This list is kid approved (they reviewed them, after all) and parent approved (I actually enjoy reading each and every one of these titles to my kids!). And best of all, they help with bedtime.
Yes, you read that right.
Help. With. Bedtime.
That time when children are thirsty even though they've had a litre of water 10 minutes ago, hungry even though they've eaten the entire cupboard... and fridge, and full of beans just because you said those words 'it's time to put your PJs on'. If you're anything like us, we use books to TRY and get them snuggled up with the hope that they will then quietly doze off as we read to them (In MY dreams!).
Anyway, what we have found is that there are certain titles that guarantee our children will actually get changed and hop into bed, no questions asked.
To view these magical books at a glance, see directly below; to get a unique perspective on each and every title (kids are so hilariously honest!), scroll further and prepare to smile your way through the most unique reviews you'll ever read!
BOOK REVIEWS: A UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE
These books have been reviewed in alphabetical order because, as my daughter said, 'they're just ALL my favourite... I don't want to pick just one' (can't argue with that now, can we!). I'd also like to mention that this is an interactive blog where your feedback is more than welcome! So, if there's a title included that you've read, please help others in making their decision by leaving your thoughts (this can be done by clicking the 'Write Review' buttons located throughout the article) ❤
More titles will be added when additional favourites come into our lives - enjoy!
Heads Up: because children have no filters, beware of little spoilers when reading their opinions.
i love you, daddy review - book author: UNKNOWN
This beautifully illustrated book will cement in your child's mind that, from playtime to cuddles, daddy is always there for them. It's such a sweet read that this sleep-deprived mum actually teared up the first time she said the words out loud!
The perfect addition to any child's library (and the perfect gift to any dad on Father's Day) - 'I love you, Daddy' pulls at the heartstrings every time!

MIX IT UP REVIEW - BOOK AUTHOR: HERVE TULLET
Ok, so whilst this one gets the kids IN to bed, it doesn't actually CALM them down... but for a great reason, I promise! It's bright, it's fun, and best of all, it's interactive. Children get to feel 'magic' - creating new colours by smudging, rubbing and shaking.
The first time we read this book, I'll never forget the look on my daughter's face.
She LOVED it.
And even though she knows what will happen on each page now (yes, we've read it so many times that she's memorised it), it's still an exciting read that is picked almost every time.

"Ohhh I LOVE mixing colours and making colours with my magic hand!" - Lollipop.

pig the pug REVIEW - book author: aaron blabey
Pig the Pug is a hilariously written and illustrated book that encourages children to make friends and share. It manages to keep everyone entertained throughout with clever verses and funny pictures - bringing home a strong message towards the end. Since first reading Pig the Pug it has become a go-to gift for friends and family. We've also since invested in the rest of the Pig series for our book collection (which are loved just as much as the original!).
Whilst Pig the Pug is aimed at children aged 5 to 9 years, it's been a firm favourite of our 4-year-old for a good year now (I think the great pictures have something to do with that)!
PIG THE PUG: A 4-YEAR-OLD'S THOUGHTS
"Trevor's a nice one and Pig's a naughty one because Pig wasn't sharing. But I still like it because Pig looks funny and Trevor's nice, and they both were being friends at the end" - Lollipop.

PIRANHAS DON'T EAT BANANAS REVIEW - book AUTHOR: AARON BLABEY
As you can probably tell, Aaron Blabey books have become quite popular in our household! From Pig to Piranhas, he definitely doesn't disappoint.
Piranhas Don't Eat Bananas, in particular, has become one of the most read books OF ALL TIME (seriously, I could probably tell you what each page says without looking). And that's because it's such a fun, funny read that has the kids giggling their way to bed. It's also a great way to get the little ones trying food (even if it's not something they're particularly fond of), because that's what the Piranhas do.
Another go-to gift of ours, great for boys and girls!
PIRANHAS DON'T EAT BANANAS: A 4-YEAR-OLD'S THOUGHTS
'It's so funny when they eat bums! [*giggles with hands over her mouth*] And I like when they tried food like I did, because it's good to try food' - Lollipop.
'I like ALL of the thingy parts! And they eat BUMS!' - Jack

possum magic review - book author: mem fox
Possum Magic is a wonderful, Australian story that involves a little possum being made invisible by her Grandma in order to keep her safe. But after some fun, the sweet little possum wants to know what she looks like again; and trying to reverse the magic is when the real adventure begins!
This book has long been a favourite of mine. I remember snuggling up in bed and listening to my parents read it when I was a child. So imagine my excitement when little miss decided it was one of her favourite books too! I find this is a great baby shower gift option for a few reasons:
- It often brings back beautiful memories for the parents (as it did for me)
- It creates new memories for the parents as they read it to their very own child/ren
- As your child grows older they will continue to enjoy this story (as you can tell, our 4-year-old still loves it)
- It's a fun way to start learning about the different Australian animals
POSSUM MAGIC: 4-YEAR-OLD'S THOUGHTS
"I like this book when the adult possum is magic and when the little possum is invisible... and I LOVE invisible! I wish I was invisible... but then I'll get sat on..." - Lollipop.

the very hungry caterpillar review - book author: eric carle
Another childhood favourite that I absolutely love reading to the kids (and they love listening to) is 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar. This book explores the journey from caterpillar to butterfly (with the added bonus of trying NEW foods - looking at you, child we battle with every night at dinner!). Such a fun book with interesting pages that the kids love!
THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR: 4-YEAR-OLD'S THOUGHTS
"This book is funny because a caterpillar got hungry, hungry and blowed up like a balloon! And I also love butterflies" - Lollipop.

WHO'S THERE? BEWARE! REVIEW - book AUTHOR: PATRICIA HEGARTY
I'm a sucker for interactive books. And this one took it to the next level... with changing pictures. Yes, CHANGING pictures! And they're amazing. Honestly, these alone have made 'Who's There? Beware!' one of our household favourites. But aside from this, it's also a cute little rhyming story that makes shadows and the dark less frightening (meaning it would be a great book for children who may get a little nervous come night-time).
WHO'S THERE? BEWARE!: A 4-YEAR-OLD'S THOUGHTS
"I REALLY like the bits when the pictures are changing; and the one with cupcakes is my favourite, because I love cupcakes. But I NEVER get cupcakes to eat them - just ONE time" - Lollipop.
